Moves – SG's Moran flying high as he leaves banking
Brendan Moran is leaving his role as co-head of UK corporate coverage at Societe Generale for an equally high-flying second career as a flight instructor.
Moran leaves at the end of October, marking the end of a nearly 30-year banking career that started in his native Sydney in 1993 at Westpac followed by stints in Singapore and Hong Kong before moving to London in 1997 with roles at Deloitte and ABN AMRO.
“I’ve loved it; it has been a wild ride,” Moran said.
He spent the rest of his career at SG, arriving at the French bank in October 2007 as a managing director and head of northern Europe just as the global financial crisis unfolded.
Moran stepped up to global co-head of corporate origination in debt capital markets in July 2010 with responsibility for bonds, private placements and hybrid capital, where he stayed for nearly seven years.
He was appointed senior banker and head of energy, natural resources and utilities in May 2017 with responsibility for managing those exposures and developing high-level relationships with clients in the sector.
He also got his pilot’s licence in 2017 after developing a passion for flying.
Moran continued in his senior banker role when he was also appointed co-head of UK corporate coverage in March 2023.
Staring a second career is clearly not retiring and Moran now has to complete exams to get his commercial rating, which will allow him to fly all fixed-wing aircraft other than jet planes – and to teach other people to fly.
He is now looking forward to being regulated by the Civil Aviation Authority rather than banking regulators.
